AIM Mobile Technology as Part of a Plant's PSM Program

The Implementation and Integration Process

Jan 26, 2021

As technology becomes more available and essential for everyday life, the incoming workforce expects the daily use of mobile technology to make their work more efficient, and they require on-demand learning opportunities as opposed to traditional classroom settings. This poses an ongoing challenge as workforces responsible for reliable operations are getting smaller, and those experienced are retiring, losing tribal knowledge and having critical operational information become outdated as a result.

The Food & Beverage manufacturing industry is currently searching for a way to synchronize the use of mobile technology with operations to improve efficiencies with a service provider and content expert. By doing this they keep critical operational information accurate and readily available on-demand whenever and wherever it is needed, especially in the field via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet.

At MSI, we have identified five critical observations and needs for end users and contractors alike.

Accountability Measures to Improve Engagement and Operational Reliability

Ensure daily refrigeration rounds and are completed efficiently, effectively, and honestly at the asset location with the use of mobile devices.

Only Information that is Critical Accessible Via Mobile Device at the Asset Location

Teams responsible for operating and maintaining facilities are smaller in size and have less experience. The demographic is shifting to a generation that expects use of technology to be efficient. As a result, easily accessible, critical information is needed at the asset location using a mobile device.

Asset Identification

All valves, equipment and major assets are not uniformly identified throughout the facility with QR or barcoding that allows for technology to be used to access asset specific information efficiently.

Management of Change (MoC)

The critical information available at each asset often changes, but may not documented properly, or at all causing a backlog of work for multiple departments who rely on up to date information. This information may include SOPs, P&IDs, OEM Manuals, and Parts Lists.

Location of Documents

The location of relevant and current asset documentation is in multiple locations and formats, and often missing entirely making daily procedures tedious and frustrating. Prioritization and time constraints limit personnel to keep critical documentation in an easily accessible location.

Keeping these observations in mind, we recommend our full suite of services to identify, manufacture, and install asset identification at your facility with AIM Mobile Technology being the cornerstone. By integrating your asset identification with AIM you will not only receive custom intelligent ID,  but our AIM Services team will be at your disposal to help locate, maintain and update your critical asset documents on an on-going basis to eliminate the hassle of Management of Change. We take ownership of engaging in ongoing services that will provide you with an on-site resource for technical support and training related to asset documentation in our AIM database.

Our goal at MSI is to ensure that your asset identification needs are being fully met, which is why we have developed the following process to assist you during the life of the project.

1. Physical Validation and Discovery Process
  • Conduct a walkthrough of the facility and identify what assets are missing proper labeling
  • Identify current asset identification without a standard naming convention
  • Identify assets that are currently identified and considered critical assets
2. Create and Manufacture Asset Tags

3. Install Asset Tags

4. Data Mining & Locating Pertinent Asset Documentation
  • Locate the relevant documents within internal or external sources which are included in the scope of work; SOP, B109, Spare Parts, LO/TO, P&ID, OIM.
5. Document Association
  • Digitalization of relevant documents and forms, or linking to existing 3rd party software via URL
  • Uploading or linking documents to the assets in the AIM database
6. Provide Ongoing On-Site Interactive Training (Formal and as Needed) on:
  • Accessing asset documentation on mobile application in the field
  • Utilizing the AIM portal via desktop
7. Maintain Accurate Documentation
  • Facilitate management of change (MoC) for existing facilities and on new greenfield construction projects based on scope of work
  • Maintain an ongoing presence to support or own updating of the asset database
8. Ongoing Onsite and 24 hour Offsite Technical Support
